Summary Draft 1

An article, “Innovative Face Mask Breaks Inclusivity Barriers” , https://www.herts.ac.uk/enterprise-zone/news-and-case-studies/case-studies/business-incubation/innovative-face-mask-breaks-inclusivity-barriers , states about innovative facemask. Dean Ezekiel created a company called Helloface that makes transparent face masks, an alternative to medical masks. The idea came from his wife who is partially deaf and relies on lip reading. It can help with communication for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as in industries where facial recognition is necessary. Dean's business, UPGRADE, which works with the travel industry, completely shut down during the first lockdown. He quickly pivoted and used his entrepreneurial skills to advance a new idea with the help of expert advice and support from the University of Hertfordshire's Business Incubator, which provided mentoring and peer-to-peer learning. The Incubator also helped Dean access funding opportunities, build knowledge and open new networks, which helped him launch his new venture to break into new markets. As a new business, Dean benefited from the support of academic experts to validate his designs, suggest improvements, and protect his intellectual property. He received business advice and mentoring which helped him move quickly and capitalize on market opportunities to develop a transparent mask with net 0 credentials. The University was able to support Helloface and thanks to the guidance provided, Dean and his team could progress confidently throughout their journey from concept to bringing a new product to market. Helloface is now ready to present its innovative, inclusive, CE marked, UK/EU compliant product to the market. The company has completed a contract with the Welsh government, SBRI Centre of Excellence, and NHS Wales to develop a clear P3 half-mask respirator that eliminates communication struggles while providing the highest level of reusable protection. Users can stay protected without shielding their faces and maintain communication with others, by using reusable and recyclable products. The University continues to advise the company on other opportunities for expansion as the company and product gain exposure, with future opportunities for collaboration.
